LUCKNOW: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday sentenced one accused, Kamar-Uz-Zaman, to life imprisonment in a Hizb-Ul-Mujahideen (HM) terror conspiracy case. He was given life imprisonment under UAPA sections.
Kamar-Uz-Zaman, from the district of Hojai, Assam, was convicted and sent to jail by the special court for a criminal conspiracy to carry out terror attacks in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India. The case was registered by the NIA after taking over the investigation from ATS Lucknow in September 2018. Five accused were charge-sheeted in the case. Kamruz and Osama Bin Javed were charge-sheeted in the NIA Special Court, Lucknow, on March 11, 2019, under various sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
They included one absconding accused, Osama Bin Javed, who was later killed in an encounter with security forces on September 18, 2019. NIA investigations established that accused Kamar-Uz-Zaman, along with co-accused, conspired to wage war against the govt of India and conspired to carry out preparatory acts with a view to targeting various Hindu temples. He was also involved in raising funds, knowing that the funds would be used by HM members for terrorist acts.
It was further found during investigations that Kamar-Uz-Zaman was radicalised by accused Osama Bin Javed to join the proscribed terrorist organisation HM. They were both recruited to HM by two active militants, namely Mohammad Amin, a district commander of HM, and Riyaz Ahmad, also known as Hazari, a district deputy commander of HM, both residents of Kishtwar, J&K.
The two HM militants were also involved in the physical and weapons handling training of Kamar-Uz-Zaman and Osama Bin Javed in the jungles of Kishtwar. Following this, Kamar-Uz-Zaman was instructed to set up bases, hideouts, and select targets in UP, Assam, and other parts of India for carrying out terrorist activities. Accordingly, Kamar-Uz-Zaman went to Kanpur, where he also carried out reconnaissance of a few targets.
