Honour killing: 25-year-old man shot dead by wife’s brother over inter-caste marriage in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district

JAIPUR: In a case of honour killing, a man along with his 10-11 friends shot his brother-in-law dead and severed his right hand with a sword in the Surajgarh area of Jhunjhunu district on Tuesday night.
The victim, Ankit Jat (25), had married Monika Rajput (21) in an inter-caste marriage at an Arya Samaj temple in Ghaziabad about seven months ago to the disapproval of the bride’s brother, Rinku Rajput.
The incident took place in Mahpalwas village near Surajgarh. On Tuesday night around 10pm, Rinku arrived at Ankit’s house with his friends in a Bolero. Rinku attacked the victim with a sword and severed his hand. He then shot him in the head.
The attackers also fired at Ankit’s mother, who tried to intervene, injuring her in the process. Hearing the gunshots, Monika also rushed out of the house and found her husband lying in a pool of blood.
“Ankit’s house is on an agricultural farm. He was taking a bath outside the house when the assailants came. Monika, Ankit’s mother and another woman were inside the house,” said a police officer.
Ankit’s family alleged that Rinku and his friends had come to their house to kill him about 20 days ago, but returned as the couple was not at home.
According to Monika, her brother Rinku has a criminal background and had been issuing threats to the couple since their marriage.
Monika told the media on Wednesday that he had visited their house twice before to intimidate them. They had sought police protection following the threats. Ankit ran a travel agency.
Couple had sought police protection
The couple had met when Monika’s family rented a car from his agency. It was rented to visit Rinku, who had been arrested by the Jhunjhunu police in a theft case, in prison.
Monika and Ankit fell in love and got married in Ghaziabad on Jan 15, staying in a hotel for several days before returning home. Fearing for their lives, they had requested police protection after marriage.
Ankit’s father, Mugaram, filed a report at the police station, naming Rinku and several others, including Preetam Singh, Vikas, Pankaj and Dipu, as suspects.
Senior police officer Jhunjhunu SP Rajarshi Raj Varma and others rushed to the spot. A forensic examination of the spot was conducted and police teams were formed to raid possible hideouts of the suspects.
During preliminary investigation, the police found that family members of Monika were not happy with her marriage to a youth from another caste. Following the incident, some villagers and family members demonstrated outside the mortuary of Surajgarh community health centre over the delay in conducting the post-mortem.
