Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and xAI, and Yann LeCun, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, have had public disagreements over AI research and development. In a recent interview, LeCun shared his frustrations with Musk, highlighting their differing views on the future of AI technology has made him upset.
LeCun, in an interview with Kara Swisher as a part of Hopkins Bloomberg Center Discovery Series, said that Musk ‘riled him up’ when he started attacking the institutions of higher learning, science and scientists.
“What got me riled up with Elon was when he started sort of attacking the institutions of higher learning, science and scientists like Anthony Fauci and things like this. I have a very independent voice,” said LeCun, who is a scientist – and is one of the three ‘Godfathers of AI’ – a professor at the New York University and an executive at Meta.
LeCun on collaborating with Musk following his influential role with Donald Trump
While LeCun was explaining that he was upset by Elon for attacking the establishment of science, he was cut-off for his views on Musk’s influential role with Donald Trump now that “he’s at the red hot center of things”.
“Well I mean I met Elon [a] bunch of times, it can be reasonable. I mean, you have to work with people right regardless of disagreements about political or philosophical opinions. At some point you have to work with people and that’s what’s going to happen,” he said.
“I don’t do policy at Meta, I work on fundamental research, I don’t do content policy. I don’t do any of that. I talk to a lot of governments around the world but mostly about AI technology and how it impacts their policies but you know I don’t have any influence on the relationship between Meta and the political system,” LeCun added.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently met Trump at Mar-a-lago over a meal.
