NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir‘s old video resurfaced on social media in which he expressed his desire to take Morne Morkel on board in his IPL team after the former South Africa pacer was named Team India‘s new bowling coach.
Gambhir’s comments in the video highlight his admiration for Morkel’s skills and the potential value he could bring to an IPL squad. The former Indian opener’s desire to have Morkel on his team showcases the respect and recognition the South African pacer has earned throughout his career.
Morkel called time on his international career following the conclusion of the series against Australia in 2018. During his illustrious career, the 39-year-old represented the Rainbow Nation in 86 Tests, 117 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 44 T20Is.

Apart from his international exploits, Morkel also made his mark in the IPL, featuring in 70 matches. He showcased his skills while representing three franchises in the league: Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
“That’s why I got him, honestly that’s why we got him in the KKR as well. I thought he was the toughest bowler I have faced. Isko apni side lelo. Jab wo Delhi ke liye khel raha tha every time I would face him, I would come back and say yar I wish we have Morne Morkel,” Gambhir said in the video.
Gambhir and Morkel formed a robust professional bond during their stint with the Lucknow Super Giants, where the former Indian opener acted as a mentor for a couple of years. Despite Gambhir’s departure to join KKR and the transition of head coach Andy Flower to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Morkel continued his association with the Lucknow-based franchise.
Gambhir’s coaching team currently features Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, with T Dilip, who previously worked under Rahul Dravid’s leadership, continuing in his role as the fielding coach.
