Can a dead man be a witness and produce evidence about the accident that claimed his life? If Gujarat police had their way, he could.
So, when Poonam Senva from Sanand’s Khoraj village died after being knocked off his bike by a truck on Viramgam-Sanand highway on Dec 8, the FIR named him as a witness.
According to sources, this was not the first such ‘howler’. In many cases of accidental deaths, the victims have been been named also as accused. In fact, Kheda police named a bovine as accused in an accident case after failing to trace its owner. Sources say police often name such ‘accused and witnesses’ as they don’t want to dig deeper.
