A yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Chennai has been maintained from November 27 to 29.
The neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet have been issued both yellow and orange alerts from November 27 to 30.
By Monday night, the depression, traveling at 18 kmph, was located 740 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam and 940 km south-southeast of Chennai. It is expected to strengthen into a deep depression within 12 hours and approach the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu over the next two days.
“There is a likelihood of heavy rainfall over the northern coastal districts in the next four to five days. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet are expected to see heavy rainfall at isolated locations on November 28 and 29,” said S. Balachandran, deputy director general of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai.
Severe rainfall has led to the closure of schools and colleges in several regions across Tamil Nadu. Authorities have declared holidays for educational institutions in Delta districts, including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur, following forecasts of intense precipitation.
In Thanjavur district, Collector Priyanka Pankajam has ordered the closure of schools under her jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, in the Thoothukudi district, restrictions on fishing activities have been implemented due to the depression. Over 300 trawlers and 2,000 country boats remain docked at the harbor.
