Indian pharmacist accused of arsenic murder and attempted murder of ex-wife and her family in Hyderabad arrested in UK

LONDON: A UK-based Indian pharmacist accused of hatching plots to murder his ex-wife and her family in Hyderabad by lacing their spices with arsenic has been arrested in Britain and is now facing extradition to India.
Ajith Kumar Mupparapu (45), an Indian national, was arrested in Maidenhead, Berkshire, on Jan 17 byspecialist national extradition unit officers from the National Crime Agency’s Joint International Crime Centre on an extradition warrant at the request of India. He was brought straight before Westminster magistrates’ court in London the same day where he said he did not consent to extradition.
He applied for bail, but it was refused by the judge owing to the nature and seriousness of the offences and that he was likely to abscond and offend. He was remanded in custody in a London prison where he remains. He appeared at the same court on Jan 24 via video link from jail but did not make a second bail appearance. His next court appearance is Feb 21.
The UK court papers say that he has been charged in India with “a heinous crime of murder and attempting to murder with arsenic poisoning and succinycholine injection on his estranged wife Dr Sirisha Muttavarapu (an oncologist) and her family”.
The documents state that Mupparapu executed multiple plans to kill Muttavarapu’s family members from Jan 2023 to Aug 2023 until six of the accused were arrested in Aug 2023. “He hired people to cause a road traffic accident to Sirisha’s father, hired contract killers; arsenic poisoning; and succinylcholine injections,” the court papers state.
Mupparapu is accused in India of trying to kill his ex-wife and all of her family from his home in Maidenhead, Berkshire, via agents in Hyderabad.
He is accused of attempting to kill her brother M Purnender and his wife Sasirekha, and her father Hanumantha Rao. In March 2023 he allegedly paid a food delivery agent Rs 2,000 to deliver arsenic-laden spices to the Rao family house. High levels of arsenic were found in all of them.
He is accused of killing his former mother-in-law, Uma Maheshwari (60), who died after consuming the spices. She was admitted to hospital on June 26, 2023 and died on July 5, 2023.
He also allegedly hired Hyderabad agents to inject succinylcholine (a skeletal muscle relaxant) into Rao’s neck.
The couple got married in Bowenpally, Hyderabad, in June 2018. Both had previously been married and Muttavarapu had a daughter from her first marriage. They initially lived in Hyderabad but then moved to the UK where Mupparapu allegedly physically and mentally abused Muttavarapu, leading her to file for divorce in 2022.
