NOIDA: A compulsive shoplifter disowned by his family due to habits that brought them shame, Indraj Meghwal wandered from city to city, finding ‘parents’ to live with almost at will.
His run as a “serial son” came to an end on Friday when he was arrested for fraud, two weeks after he suddenly appeared at a police station in Ghaziabad, claiming he had been kidnapped from there as a child and was searching for his parents.
Timeline of deception
Nov 24: Indraj arrives at Khoda police station, claiming he was kidnapped 31 years ago from Sahibabad.
He alleges he was forced to work as a bonded laborer for a cattle herder in a Jaisalmer village.
He claims a businessman visiting the village to buy sheep brought him to Delhi and advised him to report to the police.
Nov 27: Indraj is “reunited” with Tularam’s family after pretending to be their long-lost son, Bhim Singh.
Nov 30: Police detain him after discovering he had previously posed as Monu, a missing boy from a family in Dehradun.
He had allegedly left the Dehradun family, claiming he was going to Delhi for a job.
Dec 2: A resident from Sikar, Rajasthan, informs police that the same man had approached his family a year earlier, pretending to be their missing son.
Dec 3: Police collect DNA samples from Indraj and Tularam’s family and send them for testing.
Dec 5: The man’s true identity is revealed as Indraj Meghwal, a resident of Jaitsar in Rajasthan.
Police discover that Indraj is a habitual thief and fraudster.
He had lived with at least five families across Rajasthan, Dehradun, and Ghaziabad over the past four years, using different identities to pose as missing sons.
Dec 6: Indraj is arrested for fraud and impersonation, bringing an end to his years-long con as a “serial son.”
Lived with 9 different families
Police identified “Bhim” as Indraj Meghwal, a 38-year-old resident of Jaitsar in Rajasthan’s Anupgarh district.
A habitual thief, Indraj was expelled from his family home in 2005 due to his repeated misdeeds. In 2021, he stayed at a relative’s house in Hanumangarh for three months before absconding with gold jewelry and a mobile phone.
Over the past four years, he is believed to have lived with nine different families, deceiving them with a fabricated story that he had been kidnapped as a child and was searching for his parents.
