Is Iran planning to ‘eliminate’ Donald Trump by election day? – Times of India

The relationship between the US and Iran has been fraught with conflict for decades, but it significantly deteriorated during Donald Trump’s administration. Trump took a hardline stance against Iran, withdrawing the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, which aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He also authorized the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in early 2020, further straining diplomatic ties. These actions fostered a climate of hostility, with Iran perceiving Trump as a direct threat to its national security and regional influence.
So, it was not a surprise when reports came out claiming that Iran tried to hack into Trump’s presidential campaign. On August 10, 2024, Trump’s campaign announced that it had been hacked, attributing the breach to Iranian actors. The campaign claimed that sensitive internal documents were stolen and disseminated, including a report on potential vulnerabilities of Trump’s running mate, JD Vance. US intelligence agencies, including the FBI, later confirmed that Iran was indeed behind the hacking, describing it as part of a broader effort to interfere in American politics and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
The intelligence community‘s assessment indicated that Iran’s goal was to sow discord and influence the outcome of elections that it deemed critical to its interests. This reflects a strategic approach by Tehran to complicate US foreign policy and retaliate against perceived threats.
But can Iran go as far to plan an assassination attempt on Trump. According to Dr Walid Phares, who is a noted author, professor and Mideast expert, Iran may try to “eliminate” Trump by November 5, the US presidential election day.
“According to multiple governmental sources associated with US allies in the Middle East, the Islamic regime in Iran is attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump before the upcoming US election on November 5th,” Phares wrote in an article in Newsmax.
“The regime’s leaders have made multiple verbal threats against Trump’s life, with IRGC Cmdr Amir Ali Hajizadeh stating on television, “We are seeking to, Allah willing, kill Trump and [former Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo.” Recent court filings by the Department of Justice allege that a Pakistani man with ties to Iran traveled to New York City to lead an assassination attempt on Trump in late August or early September,” Phares said in the article.
As per Phares, the stakes are extremely high for both Tehran and the US, Israel, and the West. If Iran fails to stop Trump, it risks losing substantial oil revenues, while his assassination could have severe consequences for the region and beyond.
