NEW DELHI: A thick layer of toxic foam covered the Yamuna River as devotees took part in the Chhath Puja festival, immersing themselves in its polluted waters.
A video has gone viral showing a woman washing her hair in the frothy water, sparking shock among viewers online.
Reacting to the video, a user said “Is this really happening?”, while another remarked, “All that foam is not shampoo!”
A concerned user added the risks of exposing skin and hair to toxic chemicals, saying, “after a few days they will see a skin doctor.”
Delhi high court denied permission
On Wednesday, the Delhi high court denied permission for rituals on the Yamuna banks due to the river’s high pollution levels, which pose serious health risks. The court noted that cleaning the river in time for the event would be impossible.
Chief justice Manmohan and justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated, “Please understand you will fall sick. We can’t allow you (devotees) to go into the water. It is highly polluted. It is a gigantic task, it cannot be done now. We can’t clean up Yamuna in one day’s time.”
