Jagdeep Dhankar warns of 'deep state' as Rajya Sabha echoes 'Modi Adani Bhai Bhai'

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha descended into chaos on Tuesday as opposition members, led by Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh, raised slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Gautam Adani. Chants of “Modi Adani Bhai Bhai” and “Narendra Modi Murdabad” echoed in the House, disrupting proceedings and prompting Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to intervene.
Amid the ruckus, Dhankhar issued a stern warning about the rising influence of a “deep state,” which he described as a grave threat to India’s unity, sovereignty, and progress. Comparing its impact to the COVID pandemic, he called for a unified response from all political leaders.

“The functioning of the deep state has been noticed that it affects us more perniciously than COVID disease, and this is an occasion where the entire nation needs to speak in one voice,” Dhankhar said in his address. “The nation must give a direction to the people at large so that all enemies of Bharat within or outside a total lesson never to venture into a misadventure to challenge our integrity, and our sovereignty and impede our progress.”
Dhankhar also referred to a meeting held in his chamber earlier in the day between the Leader of the House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. He emphasised the importance of national integrity and urged MPs to honour their constitutional responsibilities.

“I had in my chamber a meeting between the leader of the House and the leader of the opposition,” he stated. “The purpose of that meeting was to ensure that the House runs smoothly… I would appeal to all the members of the House to carefully consider the oath of the Constitution they have taken. Their oath is very specific. They have to ensure the integrity of the nation on a priority basis.”
Reiterating the collective responsibility to counter threats to India’s unity, Dhankhar remarked, “Any challenge to the unity of the nation, to the integrity of the nation… requires all of us to offer a united challenge. This is not a challenge to one section or the other. It is a challenge to our very existence. We as a nation are committed to fighting these sinister forces, these forces that are inimical to India.”
Despite his fervent appeals, the protests continued unabated. In response, Dhankhar announced that the leaders of the House and the Opposition would reconvene in his chamber on 10 December 2024, at 10:30 AM, to further deliberate on the issues and ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament.
Concluding his remarks with a call for unity, Dhankhar said, “I am a member of both sides; we live up to the end and settle down to the nation. We are first India first. Then let us make a commitment to the nation at 100, and our nation will not go down and will not challenge the nation. Our party has integrity, and so I am sharing the meeting with the leader of the house as my follower leader will continue to meet my chamber the house steward on 10th December 2024.”
