Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal: ‘Generational talents at the peak of their powers’ | Cricket News – Times of India

Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal headlined India’s record 295-run win in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. If Bumrah started the turnaround with this five-wicket spell, Jaiswal took over with his big century to bat Australia out of the game. Hailing their efforts and skills, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell called them “generational talents”.
The 22-year-old Jaiswal showed a lot of character in his first match on Australia soil, overcoming a setback in the first innings (out for zero) with a dazzling century in the second.
“He’s (Jaiswal) a guy that will probably get more than 40 Test hundreds and write some different records,” said Maxwell on ‘The Grade Cricketer’ podcast. “He’s got a great ability to adapt to different conditions.”
Jaiswal’s 161 also included a 201-run opening partnership with KL Rahul (77), which is a record for India in Australia.
It was his fourth Test century in shis 28th innings spread across 15 matches; and he has a knack of socing daddy hundreds. Two of those centuries are double hundreds.
He averages 58.07 for the 1568 runs he has scored so far in Test cricket.
“It’s going to be scary if Australia can’t find a way to stop him over the next few games,” Maxwell said.
“He played a lot of shots that will be on highlights packages, but the stuff he did in between… the balls he left, the balls he got in behind… His footwork is pretty crisp; doesn’t seem to have many weaknesses. Plays the short ball well, drives well, plays spin unbelievably well and can absorb pressure for periods of time.
Bumrah, who stood in as captain for Rohit Sharma in Perth, ended up with a match-haul of 8 for 72 to win the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Almost unplayable, he continued from where he left on the last two tours of Australia, where India registered historic series triumphs.
Maxwell felt Bumrah might end up as the “greatest fast bowler of all time”.
“I have said this before: Bumrah is going to go down as potentially the best fast bowler of all time — maybe not with the amount of wickets he takes in every format but for the guys that have played against him; it is just so difficult,” Maxwell added.
“He’s just got such unique action, unique ability with the ball to get it to move and rush you; he can beat you on the outside edge, inside edge and he’s got a quick sniff good slower ball. He seems like a complete package.
“They (India) have got two genuine generational talents at the peak of their powers, which is Bumrah and Jaiswal.”
