However, Harry Brook revealed that his primary motivation was not to break records held by the likes of Graham Gooch but to surpass his father’s highest score. With a beaming smile, he admitted, “I just wanted to get past my dad’s highest score! I’ve said that before, and I was pretty happy when I got past his score, to be honest.”
Harry Brook’s father David Brook registered his highest score of 210 runs while playing for the Burley Cricket Club against Woodhouse in 2001. Brook said that the moment he passed his father’s record, he felt elated. Note, Brook also became the first England batter to score a triple century in Test cricket after Graham Gooch, who achieved the feat against India in 1990.
Harry Brook’s incredible achievement has cemented his place in cricketing history, with England going on to secure a victory on Day 5, becoming the first team to win a Test match after conceding 500 runs or more in the first innings. Despite his exhaustion, Brook was visibly thrilled, saying, “I’m still absolutely knackered… I’m sure I will sleep well tonight and reflect on it later.”
When asked about his remarkable partnership with mentor turned teammate Joe Root, Harry Brook humbly attributed their success to a “good pitch” and admitted to being “lost for words.”
“I’ve never heard of a total like that before; me and Rooty just tried to cash in on what was a good pitch. It was a tiring day… I’m lost for words,” Brook said.
