MEERUT: A mob of kanwariyas attacked four men from the minority community after their car, allegedly driving in the wrong lane, accidentally brushed a devotee on the Delhi-Dehradun highway in Meerut on Friday. SP (City) Ayush Vikram Singh said, “Cops were alerted, but the mob had already vandalised the car before the police arrived.”
A purported video of the incident shows the four men locked in the car while the mob vandalised it and thrashed the occupants.Three managed to escape, while one was caught by the mob and handed over to the police. Another video of the incident showed a kanwariya standing on the car’s roof, raising religious slogans. Police have not disclosed the victims’ names, saying that neither party have sought legal action.
On Thursday, a speeding car hit a devotee, causing a head injury on the same highway. Police later said both had minor injuries, and no FIR was lodged.
This isn’t the first instance of violence involving kanwariyas. Recently, in Muzaffarnagar, they thrashed Mohd Abid and vandalised his car, alleging “desecration”. Abid said, “I wasn’t speeding. I stopped abruptly as a biker suddenly crossed my car. The kanwariyas thrashed me and tried to stab me.”
In another incident, 50 kanwariyas were charged for thrashing a petrol pump employee and vandalising a store after the employee resisted littering on the premises. Additionally, in Muzaffarnagar, a group assaulted a man with a mental disorder. Four kanwariyas also attacked a parking lot employee with swords over a parking fee dispute in Uttarakhand this week.
