Kolakata doctor rape-murder: Protests hit med services across country

As protests raged on medical college campuses across the country on Tuesday over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case, students of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) prevented Dr Sandip Ghosh – who resigned as RG Kar Medical College principal on Monday following the uproar – to assume charge as CNMC principal.
Two senior TMC legislators faced the ire of agitating doctors when they visited CNMC on Tuesday, pleading with them to allow Ghosh to assume charge.The agitating doctors and interns made it clear to the TMC netas that they would continue with their stir till the govt ceased its attempt to dump the “RG Kar garbage on CNMC.”
Strike by resident doctors across Rajasthan disrupted healthcare systems at govt-run hospitals on Tuesday. Elective surgeries were postponed and patients were sent home, while the number of emergency surgeries decreased. Long queues of patients were seen at OPDs across hospitals.
In Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, more than 1,500 resident doctors in govt hospitals went on an indefinite strike from Tuesday. The strike affected OPD services and planned surgeries.
Though there was no major disruption in work in hospitals in Mumbai, OPDs in the five medical colleges – KEM Hospital, JJ Hospital, LTMG Hospital, Nair Hospital and Cooper Hospital – were managed by medical teachers, bonded resident doctors and interns.
In Ranchi, 1,000 junior doctors of the Jharkhand govt-run RIMS began their indefinite stir from Tuesday as OPD services as well as other facilities suffered.
Junior doctors and MBBS students in Guwahati demanded strict laws and swift action in the case.
Patients coming to PGI-Chandigarh suffered as angry resident doctors went on indefinite strike. tnn
