Kolkata rape-murder case: Accused's '9 articles' among 53 items key to CBI's RG Kar probe

KOLKATA: A key aspect of the ongoing CBI investigation into the rape and murder of a postgraduate resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College involves the 53 items seized by Kolkata police, including “nine incriminating articles” found on prime accused Sanjay Roy, such as the clothes, undergarments, and sandals he was wearing during the crime.
The inventory includes crucial digital evidence such as phone tower locations, which placed Roy at the crime scene during the attack in the hospital’s seminar hall on Aug 9.Roy’s bike and helmet were also confiscated as evidence.
CBI sources said Saturday that forensic reports, expected in batches over the coming days, will be critical to the case. Of particular importance are the 40 exhibits collected by the state forensic science laboratory from the crime scene between 8.30pm and 10.45pm on Aug 9. The entire process was documented on video in the presence of local witnesses, including doctors.
The extraction of data from Roy’s cloned mobile phone, which was carried out in court by experts under the supervision of a magistrate, is another piece of vital digital evidence. CCTV footage from two hospital cameras – number 8 and number 16 – also shows Roy on the premises, which will be submitted as part of the case.
Further evidence was gathered at the crime scene by fingerprint and footprint experts from the detective department’s scientific wing. The medical report on Roy, detailing injuries on his left cheek, left hand, and the back of his left thigh, will be used as proof of his involvement.
Roy’s blood samples, collected to be matched with those found at the crime scene, will also be critical to the forensic analysis.
A requisition was made to Kolkata police traffic control room and a nationalised bank in the city’s Shyambazar locality for the preservation of CCTV footage relevant to the case. This footage will be included in the digital evidence that CBI plans to submit with its charge sheet in court, sources in the central agency said.
