SC says it will not stop streaming of live proceedings
The apex court refused to halt the live streaming of the suo motu case proceedings related to the incident, emphasising that it is a matter of public interest and the public has the right to know what is happening in the courtroom.
During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, requested the court to stop the live proceedings, claiming that women lawyers in the chamber are receiving threats of acid attacks and rape. The top court assured Sibal that it would intervene if there were any threats to lawyers or others involved in the case.
SC directs Wikipedia to remove the name of the victim
The solicitor general informed the court that Wikipedia was still displaying the victim’s name and photo. The court then ordered Wikipedia to remove the victim’s name, saying, “In the interest of maintaining the dignity and privacy of the deceased, the governing principle is that the identity of the victim in a rape and murder case shall not be disclosed. Wikipedia shall take steps to comply with the previous order passed.”
The court also clarified that no one can claim that the CBI destroyed any evidence related to the crime, including the 27 minutes of CCTV camera footage. The West Bengal police informed the court that all evidence related to the crime had been handed over to the CBI.
SC asks CBI to file status report
The apex court has requested the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities in the medical departments. The hearing is currently ongoing.
The medic’s body, bearing severe injury marks, was discovered on August 9. The following day, a civic volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case. On August 13, the Calcutta high court transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which commenced its probe on August 14.
No adverse action would be taken, assures WB govt
Further, the West Bengal government assured the Supreme Court that no punitive or adverse action would be taken against the protesting doctors.
The apex court later adjourned the hearing in the Kolkata rape-murder case and said that it will take up matter after a week.
