Lights out: Kolkata on streets with ‘reclaim the night’ campaign to protest over doctor rape-murder | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, hundreds gathered across Kolkata to demand justice for a woman doctor murdered at the state-run R G Kar hospital last month. The gathering was part of the city’s ‘reclaim the night‘ campaign that aims to focus on women issues related to safety.
People assembled at key locations such as New Town’s Biswa Bangla Gate, Shyambazar, Sinthir More, Sodpur Traffic More, Hazra More, Jadavpur 8B bus stand, Lake Gardens, and Behala Sakher Bazar, echoing the movement of August 14 midnight.Protesters called for justice for the slain doctor.

Participants sang Kazi Nazrul Islam’s revolutionary song, ‘Karar Oi Louho Kapat, Bhenge Phel Korre Lopat‘ (Let’s unshackle the iron grill).

Prominent Bengali film personalities Swastika Mukherjee and Sohini Sarkar joined in at the Golf Green and Shyambazar locations, respectively, supporting the call for justice and freedom from oppression.

Earlier in the day, lawyers formed human chains outside Calcutta High Court and Bankshall Court advocating for justice for the victim. Lawyers from Bankshall Court also participated in a rally for the doctor.

The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, prompting nationwide outrage. Since the incident, the CBI has arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for alleged financial misconduct at the prestigious establishment.
