NEW DELHI: As the family of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s wife denied any wrongdoing and harassment leading to his suicide, details of Nikita Singhania‘s police complaint against her husband have emerged.
Subhash, 34, reportedly died by suicide on December 9, citing alleged harassment by his estranged wife and her family. In his suicide note, he said that nine police cases were filed by his wife to harass him.
According to a PTI report, Nikita had lodged a complaint in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur on April 24, 2022 alleging harassment and assault for dowry. She had mentioned her husband, his parents and brothers-in-law as accused.
A complaint was registered at Jaunpur’s Kotwali police station, under IPC sections 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives), 323 (assault), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), along with relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
According to Nikita, her marriage to Subhash took place on April 26, 2019. She stated that her husband and in-laws expressed dissatisfaction with the wedding gifts from her parents and demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh.
She reported experiencing physical and mental abuse over dowry demands.
Despite sharing her ordeal with her parents, they advised her to be patient and continue living with her husband’s family, hoping conditions would improve. However, the situation remained unchanged.
“My husband started to beat me up after drinking alcohol and started treating the husband-wife relationship with me like a beast. He used to transfer my entire salary from my account to his account by threatening me,” Nikita had claimed.
She additionally stated that her father’s health suddenly declined due to distress over the dowry demands from her in-laws. He suffered a stroke on August 17, 2019, and subsequently passed away during medical treatment.
In a harrowing 24-page suicide note left behind by Subhash, he detailed years of alleged relentless harassment and false legal accusations orchestrated by his wife and her family. He accused a family court judge in Jaunpur of bias and claimed that bribes were taken in the judge’s presence.
Subhash’s note repeatedly stated, “Justice is Due,” and he requested that his ashes not be immersed until justice was served. Hours before his death, Subhash recorded a video where he described the immense mental and physical toll the legal battles had taken on him.
He appealed for custody of his son to be granted to his parents and held his wife and in-laws responsible for driving him to the extreme step.
