NEW DELHI: In the IPL auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) approached the event with a carefully planned budget.
Prior to the retention phase, each IPL franchise was allocated a budget of Rs 120 crore. LSG utilized Rs 69 crore of their budget to secure their key players, thereby reserving Rs 51 crore for the auction.
Among the players retained were Nicholas Pooran, who was signed for Rs 21 crore, Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav, each for Rs 11 crore, and the uncapped talents Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan, who were retained for Rs 4 crore apiece.
During the auction, LSG engaged in a competitive bidding process, notably for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who was previously associated with Delhi Capitals (DC).
Pant, who is currently participating in the Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia, was acquired by LSG after outbidding Sunrisers Hyderabad and DC.
The bidding for Pant started at a base price of Rs 2 crore and escalated to a record-setting figure, surpassing the previous auction record.
This acquisition marks Pant’s first tenure with an IPL team outside of his native Delhi, highlighting a significant shift in his IPL career.
This strategic move by LSG not only demonstrates their intent to strengthen their squad but also reflects the dynamic nature of the IPL auction process, where teams vie for top talents to enhance their chances in the tournament.
The acquisition of Pant, in particular, signifies a major investment by LSG, aiming to bolster their batting lineup and bring in a player with a proven track record in the IPL.
The IPL auction process, as evidenced by LSG’s participation, involves meticulous financial planning and strategic decision-making, with teams balancing between retaining core players and bidding for new talents to assemble a competitive squad.
LSG’s approach to this year’s auction, including their high-profile acquisition of Rishabh Pant, underscores their ambitions for the upcoming IPL season.
