KANPUR: Eight people died while 40 others were injured in a road accident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Kannauj district on Friday afternoon.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when a double-decker bus en route to Delhi from Lucknow crashed into a tanker that was watering plants along the divider. The collision caused both vehicles to overturn after hitting the divider with considerable force.
Uttar Pradesh’s water resources minister Swatantra Dev Singh, who happened to be travelling on the same expressway, halted his convoy to assess the situation and facilitated the transportation of the injured to medical facilities.
The wounded were subsequently transferred to the Medical facilities in Tirwa, Kannauj and Saifai, Etawah.
Survivors from the bus revealed that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control before colliding with the tanker.
Local residents assisted in the rescue operation by breaking the bus windows to extract trapped passengers.
Emergency services, including the UPEIDA team and police, arrived promptly at the scene.
District officials, including district magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukla, superintendent of police Amit Kumar Anand and Saurikh Police Station In-charge, visited the accident site.
The SP confirmed that the casualties included five passengers, one woman, and the bus driver. Minister Swatantra Dev Singh has directed the DM to conduct an investigation into the incident.
