NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has so far suspended a total of 28 rebel candidates, who were contesting against the official nominees of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in the upcoming assembly elections.
Earlier on Sunday, 21 candidates were suspended but seven more names were added to the list by night, bringing the total to 28 across 22 constituencies.
Prominent leaders who faced action include former minister Rajendra Mulak (Ramtek constituency), Yagnyavalk Jichkar (Katol), Kamal Vyawhare (Kasba), Manoj Shinde (Kopri Pachpakhadi), and Aaba Bagul (Parvati).
This disciplinary action comes as the party seeks to maintain unity within its ranks ahead of the crucial elections.
Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala stated the party’s stance on the matter, saying, “All party rebels contesting against the official MVA candidates would face a six-year suspension.”
The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23.
