CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Vilas Mukade, a 32-year-old police constable, fired shots at his family members late on Wednesday night killing his wife on the spot and critically injuring three others, including his two-year-old son.
The incident occurred at his in-laws’ residence in the Pragati Nagar area of Hingoli city.
Learning about the incident, senior police officers visited the spot. The spot panchanama revealed at least four bullets were fired from Mukhade’s 9mm service pistol.
Hingoli SP Shrikrishna Kokate said: “Preliminary probe revealed differences between the accused constable and his wife, Mayuri. They were considering a divorce, but could not agree upon the settlement amount. We have arrested the accused, who had immediately fled the scene after the attack.”
The officer, citing official records, said Mukade was on duty until Wednesday evening. After getting a phone call from Mayuri, Mukade left the police station and went straight to his in-laws’ residence.
Officers said Vilas and Mayuri had been married for six years. The accused, along with his wife and child, resided in Hingoli’s Vasmat, where he served as crime mohril. He was responsible for storing and handling arms and ammunition at the police station.
LCB assistant inspector Shivsamb Gheware said the couple’s latest argument was on Tuesday, following which Mayuri went to her parents’ home. The accused constable reached the house on Wednesday and fired bullets from his 9mm service pistol.
“The accused claimed his wife was mentally harassing him and his father. He said he wanted to separate from her. He travelled almost 60km and reached Hingoli, where he allegedly committed the crime,” said Gheware.
Mayuri died on the spot, while the couple’s two-year-old son, elderly mother-in-law and brother-in-law were injured.
The three injured people are being treated at the civil hospital in Hingoli city. Considering the nature of injuries they sustained, the medical authorities were thinking of moving them to a higher medical facility in the neighbouring Nanded district.
