Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Thar three-door: Top five changes explained – Times of India

Mahindra and Mahindra recently launched the much anticipated Mahindra Thar Roxx in the Indian market. The Roxx is the 5-door version of the standard Thar. It has an updated design, new features, bigger dimensions, and more. Bookings for the SUV will begin from October 3 with test drives starting from September 14 onwards. The deliveries are set to begin from Dussehra – on October 12, 2024.

In this article, let’s take a look at the top five changes of the new Thar Roxx when compared to the standard model.
Variants and pricing
The Roxx is available in six variants – MX1, MX3, MX5, AX3L, AX5L and AX7L with prices starting from Rs 12.99 lakh for the MX1 base petrol MT, going up to Rs 20.49 lakh for the AX7L diesel MT, ex-showroom introductory. The company has revealed the prices of the RWD variants available in both petrol and diesel options, the prices for the 4×4 variants will be announced soon.

The Thar 3-door is offered in LX hardtop, LX convertible, AX (O) hardtop, AX(O) convertible and Earth edition with prices ranging from Rs 11.35 lakh to Rs 17.7 lakh (ex-showroom). The standard Thar is also offered in RWD guise but with a smaller engine.
Design changes
Both the Thar Roxx and the Thar 3 door feature rugged, boxy design language. However, few details differentiate them. The Roxx features a double-stacked six-slot grille instead of the seven-slot design of the 3-door version. The circular headlamps now feature LED projectors and C-shaped DRLs. While the fog lights and turn indicators retain their positions, they now have a sleeker appearance.

The elongated wheelbase is visible to accommodate the two extra doors and also rear door handle is housed in the C-pillar. The front bumper is finished in a contrasting silver finish as compared to a black finish and it also gets newly designed multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels. Dimensions
Comparing the dimensions, the Thar Roxx is bigger in length, width, and height and also has a longer wheelbase. The 5-door SUV measures 4428 mm in length, 1870 mm in width, 1923 mm in height and has a wheel base of 2860 mm. The standard Thar measures 3985 mm in length, 1820 mm in width, and 1855 mm in height and has a wheel base of 2450 mm. The Thar Roxx is a longer 3-door by 443 mm and also has a 400 mm extra wheelbase. The difference in width and height is smaller, with only a 50 mm and 68 mm increase, respectively. The Roxx also has much larger 644 litres of boot space.

Features
The Thar Roxx also comes packed with features when compared to the regular Thar. It gets LED projector headlights with LED DRLs, 19-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, six airbags, ESC, three-point seat belts for all passengers, rear AC vents, 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, fully digital instrument cluster, AdrenoX connected car tech, auto headlights with wipers, footwell lighting, ambient lighting, wireless charger, Level 2 ADAS with 10 features, automatic climate control, electric parking brake with auto hold, panoramic sunroof, leather-wrapped door trims, 6-way powered driver seat, front ventilated seats, cooled glove box, 360-degree camera, blind spot monitor, obstacle view, 9-speaker Harman/Kardon speakers with subwoofer, power foldable ORVM, 65 Watt USB C ports and the list goes on.

Engine and gearbox options
Talking about the engine and gearbox, the Thar Roxx uses the same turbo-petrol and diesel engine options as the 3-door Thar, but in a higher state of tune. The MStallion 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine in the Roxx puts out 177 PS of power, and 380 Nm torque in automatic variants, the manual variants put out 162 PS power and 330 nm torque. Talking about the diesel, the 2.2-litre MHawk turbo diesel puts out 175 PS of power and 370 nm torque in 4×4 variants and 152 PS of power, and 330 nm torque in RWD variants. Both engines get a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission option.

Talking about the standard Thar, The MStallion 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine puts out 152 PS of power, and 300Nm torque in manual variants and 300 nm in AT variants. The diesel, 2.2-litre MHawk turbo puts out 132 PS of power and 300 nm torque in both AT and MT variants. As mentioned previously, the 3-door gets RWD with smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine. It puts out 119 PS of power, and 300 nm torque and comes paired only with a 6-speed manual.
