‘Maligning of history … ‘: Congress calls PM’s ‘communal code’ remark insult to Ambedkar | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Thursday took a potshot at PM Modi over his “communal civil code” remark which he gave while addressing the nation on the 78th Independence Day.
Speaking on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from the rampart of the Red Fort, PM Modi said the existing civil laws are “communal” and that “secular civil laws” are required which truly reflects the diverse society of the nation.
“Supreme Court has held discussions regarding Uniform Civil Code again and again…it has given orders several times. A large section of the country believes – and it is true, that the civil code we are living with is actually a Communal Civil Code in a way…I would say that it is the need of the hour to that there be a Secular Civil Code in the country…only then would we be free of the discrimination on the basis of religion…,” PM Modi said at the Red Fort.
PM’s statement on the UCC ruffled feathers in the Congress as Jairam Ramesh accused him of “insulting” BR Ambedkar and highlighted the report of the 21st Law Commission which advocated against the absolute implementation of the UCC.
“The non-biological PM‘s capacity for malice, mischief, and maligning of history knows no bounds. It was on full display today from the Red Fort. To say that we have had a “communal civil code” till now is a gross insult to Dr Ambedkar, who was the greatest champion of reforms in Hindu personal laws that became a reality by the mid-1950s,” Jairam said.
“These reforms had been bitterly opposed by the RSS and the Jan Sangh,” the Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP further wrote.

The introduction of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has long been a part of the BJP’s election manifestos. Several BJP-led state governments have taken steps toward implementing a UCC, with Uttarakhand leading the way as the first state to adopt it.
The UCC has its mention under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, which mandates that the state shall strive to secure a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens across the country.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill proposes to establish uniform regulations for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights for all citizens. The UCC aims to ensure that these rules apply equally to everyone, regardless of religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
