Manchester United are in talks with Ruben Amorim to become their next manager after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday. Ten Hag’s dismissal follows a poor start to the season, with the team currently 14th in the Premier League points table.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as interim manager. Reports indicate that United are willing to pay Amorim’s release clause of €10 million to secure his services. Amorim, who manages Sporting Lisbon, is seen as a leading young coach in Europe.
Ten Hag, who joined United in May 2022, had a mixed record. He won two trophies but struggled this season despite a significant investment in new players. The team has only one win in their last eight games.
Gary Neville commented on the situation, stating, “The big shock for me is how bad they’ve been with the new signings that have come in. The fact that they are 14th is unacceptable. You can’t be in 14th after nine or 10 games with the level of spend that’s occurred without being under significant pressure — and that’s what’s happened.”
Manchester United have seen substantial changes off the field and in their sporting structure recently. Despite a surprising FA Cup win last season, Ten Hag was ultimately unable to improve the team’s performance this year.
