NAGPUR: The Peoples’ Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) fighters and their supporters of banned outfit of Communist party of India (Maoist) gunned down their former colleague, Jairam Gawade, labelling him as an ‘informer’ before dumping his body in the middle of the Arewada-Hiddur road in the highly sensitive Bhamragarh taluka on Thursday night. They left behind a note near the body stating Gawade was handed out ‘death sentence’ for being a ‘traitor’.
Gawade was leading a peaceful life with wife Dewe Pungati alias Raso as a farmer. The couple had joined the rebels in 2007 and surrendered in 2017.
The Maoists, who are gearing up to observe annual ‘PLGA week’ between July 27 and August 2 in their strongholds to pay homage to their slain comrades, are known to escalate violence to spread terror during the period.
Sources stated Gawade was whisked away from his residence by the Maoists. The rebels told his wife that she would be able to see him again in the morning.
SP Gadchiroli Neelotpal trashed the allegations of the Maoists labelling Gawade as a traitor. Neelotpal stated the rebels had shot dead their former colleague for no apparent reasons. “The deceased was not a police informer. He had no links with anyone in the police. The Maoists probably murdered him as he had returned to the mainstream to live a peaceful life instead of following their violent ideology,” he said.
Police feel the Maoists’ act was aimed at creating terror in Gadchiroli following big setbacks like the latest Wandoli encounter near Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border where their 12 comrades were killed.
Sources stated Gawade and Raso earlier were part of PLGA’s platoon no. 14 which was active in north Gadchiroli. Gawade was an area committee member.
