Misleading advertisements case: SC closes contempt proceedings against Ramdev, Balkrishna, Patanjali Ayurved Ltd | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has closed contempt proceedings against Swami Ramdev, Acharya Balakrishna, and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. in connection with the misleading advertisements case.
Ramdev and Acharya had faced criticism from the Supreme Court for Patanjali’s deceptive ads that went against evidence-based medicine. The company was found to have violated their earlier commitment to refrain from broadcasting or publishing such misleading advertisements.
“The court has closed the contempt proceedings based on the undertakings given by Ramdev, Balkrishna and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd,” advocate Gautam Talukdar, who represented the yoga guru, Balkrishna and the firm, said.
The top court was hearing a plea filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which alleged that Patanjali Ayurved had engaged in a smear campaign against the Covid vaccination drive and modern medical practices. The company had previously committed to refraining from publishing or broadcasting such deceptive advertisements but was found to have violated this agreement.
In February 2023, the Supreme Court temporarily banned such advertisements and issued contempt of court notices to Patanjali Ayurved and Balkrishna for making false claims.
The company and its founders sought forgiveness from the court for their violation and published apologies in various newspapers. Ramdev also apologized for discussing the case during a press conference in November 2023, after the Court had already reprimanded Patanjali Ayurved.
