BAREILLY: A mob attacked and vandalized the house of a Muslim man named Mohd Saddam (21) after he eloped with a 20-year-old Hindu woman in Bareilly’s Chandupura Shivnagar village, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday night.
The perpetrators set both the house and a small shop on fire. When the police arrived at the scene, the mob also vandalized their vehicle. The police officials managed to escape and inform their superiors, who then sent additional forces from nearby stations to control the situation. The fire brigade arrived and extinguished the fire.
The incident began on Monday when Saddam eloped with the woman, and her father reported the matter to the police. The couple was found , and the woman was returned to her father on Friday, while Saddam remained in police custody. Despite the woman’s father refusing to take further action, a group of right-wing activists pressured the police to act and later attacked Saddam’s house.
Two FIRs have been registered: one against the mob for rioting, based on the police complaint, and another against Saddam for abducting the woman, based on her father’s complaint. SSP Bareilly Anurag Arya stated, “Police received a complaint that a 20-year-old woman had eloped with her neighbour Saddam on July 29.
Both of them were recovered by police on Thursday night and the woman was handed over to her father on Friday. Saddam was detained for questioning. On Friday night, a few antisocial elements vandalised the items at Saddam’s house and sent a charpoy on fire. Force was sent to the village and the situation is under control. An FIR has been registered against the perpetrators under the sections of rioting and another FIR is registered against Saddam on the complaint of woman’s father.”
The SSP also said that “Sirauli SHO Love Sirohi, sub-inspector Satveer Singh and a constable have been suspended for displaying negligence in the case.” Currently, over 100 police officers are deployed in the village to maintain law and order.
