Australian authorities have condemned a series of anti-Semitic graffiti attacks across Sydney, calling the acts “monstrous” after more properties were defaced early morning on Saturday.
Police said that vandals painted red swastikas at an inner-city synagogue’s entrance overnight, while another house in Sydney’s affluent east was defaced with anti-Jewish slurs, according to news agency AFP.
NSW Premier Chris Minns strongly condemned the anti-Semitic acts and urged any witnesses to come forward. “These people are determined to divide our community in two,” he stated.
“We will always call out these acts for what they are, monstrous and appalling,” he added.
He further announced a one-off security grant of $340,000 to support the New South Wales Jewish community’s enhanced temporary security measures.
Police are also investigating a separate incident in Marrickville, where offensive comments were written on a poster, while swastikas were scrawled on the Southern Sydney Synagogue in Allawah during a Friday morning attack.
The site falls within the Kogarah constituency represented by the NSW premier, who condemned the perpetrators by stating they were “bastards … with hate in their hearts,” The Guardian reported.
Police have launched investigations into the Allawah incident. These events follow several antisemitic incidents across Sydney in recent months, including vandalism to a vehicle in Queens Park on Monday.
Earlier in December, the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne was firebombed in a devastating arson attack that prompted widespread condemnation from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other leaders.
The December arson attack in Melbourne led to the establishment of a federal task force focused on combating anti-Semitism.
The Gaza conflict has heightened tensions between Israel and Palestinian supporters in Australia, leading to regular protests.
Australia’s Jewish population numbers approximately 100,000, with significant communities in Melbourne and Sydney’s eastern districts.
