‘Most powerful since 1949’: Shanghai braces for Typhoon Bebinca, hundreds of flights cancelled – Times of India

Shanghai suspended transportation, recalled ships, and closed tourist spots such as Shanghai Disney Resort, as it braces itself for Typhoon Bebinca, which could be the most powerful tropical cyclone to strike the city since 1949.
On Sunday afternoon, the China Meteorological Administration issued a typhoon red alert, cautioning about strong winds and heavy rainfall in eastern China.

As of 5:00 p.m. (0900 GMT), the Category 1 typhoon, with maximum sustained wind speeds near its center of around 144 kph (89 mph), was located approximately 400 km southeast of Shanghai. It is predicted to make landfall along China’s eastern coast after midnight on Monday.
All flights at Shanghai’s two airports will be canceled from 8 pm local time on Sunday and the operator, Shanghai Airport (Group) Co, stated that adjustments will be made based on the typhoon’s impact.
Additionally, the Shanghai railway station has suspended certain services citing passenger safety, while the Shenzhen government announced the temporary halt of trains traveling to and from Shanghai.
Popular tourist destinations in Shanghai, including “Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park and Shanghai Wild Animal Park,” have temporarily been closed. Most ferry services to and from Chongming Island, known as “the gateway to the Yangtze River,” have been suspended.

In the neighboring province of Zhejiang, ships have been called back to port, and several parks in the provincial capital, Hangzhou, have announced closures in preparation for the storm.
Meanwhile, China’s ministry of water resources, in response to the potential flooding risks in Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, has issued a Level-IV emergency response, the lowest level in the country’s four-tier emergency response system.
The strongest storm to make landfall in Shanghai was Typhoon Gloria in 1949 with wind speed upto 144 kph. In 2022, Typhoon Muifa posed a direct threat to Shanghai but ultimately made landfall 300 km away in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province.
Although Shanghai is generally spared from the intense typhoons that affect southern China, such as the devastating Category 4 storm Yagi that recently swept past southern Hainan province, Shanghai and nearby provinces are not taking any chances with Category 1 Bebinca.
The arrival of Bebinca coincides with the Mid-Autumn festival, a three-day national holiday during which many Chinese citizens travel or participate in outdoor activities.
