BHOPAL: A 35-year-old farmer was allegedly crushed to death under a tractor by sand mining mafia when he tried to stop them from driving through his paddy fields in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli late on Sunday.
In May this year, the sand mafia had mowed down an ASI in Shahdol and last month, a tehsildar narrowly escaped a similar murder bid.
The victim, Indrapal Agariya, lived in Gannai village. On Monday night, locals protested outside district hospital where his autopsy was being carried out. Cop initially said that it was an accident, but Indrapal’s kin told them he was brutally thrashed before being thrown under the wheels of a sand-laden tractor. Villagers demanded a murder case be registered.
“Indrapal had cultivated paddy on his farm near the riverbank. Around 7.30pm Sunday, two sand-laden tractors began driving through his farm. When he objected, the men first thrashed him and then mowed him down under one of the tractors,” Gannai sarpanch’s representative Rajpal Prajapati told TOI. “It is murder, not an accident. We will end our protests only when we get a copy of FIR,” he added.
Police said things will be clear in the autopsy report. “The farmer died after coming under the tractor. Now, his kin says he was beaten before being mowed down. Two have been named and there are six unnamed accused,” the SP said.
