Jay Shah will start a new innings with the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah was elected unopposed as the new ICC Chair. Shah succeeds Greg Barclay as the new chairman. But before Shah succeeds New Zealand’s Barclay, he will have to give up his role as the BCCI secretary which he has held since 2019. Shah had a very successful stint at the BCCI with India playing two World Test Championship finals (2021 and 2023), qualifying for the finals of the ODI World Cup (2023) and winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (2024).
Indian Cricketers React To Jay Shah’s Appointment
Gambhir, who has taken over as head coach from Rahul Dravid, said: “Many congrats Jay Shah bhai! I know world cricket will grow tremendously under your exceptional leadership!” Pandya, who played a pivotal role in India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph wrote: “Congratulations @Jay Shah bhai on being elected as the youngest chairman of ICC.
“Look forward to seeing you take cricket to even greater heights. Your vision and drive will help ICC, just like it did with BCCI.” Binny, the 1983 World Cup winner, rated Shah as a “strong pillar” of BCCI.
Jay Shah Reacts To His Appointment
The 35-year-old Shah, who has been the BCCI secretary since 2019, will take over from the 62-year-old incumbent Greg Barclay on December 1 as the youngest ICC Chairman after the New Zealander decided against running for a third consecutive term of two years.
“While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game.
“We must see to it that cricketers are driven to longer format and our efforts will be channelized towards this goal,” Shah said in a statement issued by the BCCI.
