NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan, on Monday, raised objections in the Rajya Sabha when chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed her by her full name, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, calling it a “new drama” in Parliament.

During the session, Jaya Bachchan remarked, “Sir, I hope you know the meaning of Amitabh. I mean, I am proud of the association with my marriage and my husband, but I am just saying that I am very happy and proud of my husband’s achievements.”
She continued, “This is a new drama started by you all. This did not use to happen before.”
Chairman Dhankhar responded to her concerns, highlighting the procedural norms tied to election certificates. He explained, “However, Jaya Ji, the name that appears in the election certificate is what is used, and you can get the name changed; there is a provision for that.”
SP MP Bachchan also questioned why Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar did not include his wife’s name after his. Khattar, who is unmarried, humorously replied, “As for my wife’s name in front of mine… not in this birth; for this, you will have to wait until the next birth.”
This instance mirrored a prior objection made by Bachchan on July 29, when deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan during House proceedings. She expressed her discomfort by saying, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed,” highlighting the issue of women being identified primarily through their husbands’ names.
