Shamsud Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old ISIS operative, who killed 15 people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year Day wanted to kill his family members as revealed in the video that he posted just before the attack but he was concerned that the news headlines would not focus on the war between the believers and the disbelievers, the FBI said confirming that the attacker acted alone. In a press conference, FBI deputy assistant director Christopher Raia said Shamsud Din Jabbar drove from Houston to New Orleans and posted several videos proclaiming his support for ISIS. In one video, he explained that he originally planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned that headlines would not focus on the “war between the believers and the disbelievers” if he killed his family and friends too.
What we know about Shamsud Din Jabbar’s family?
A US Army veteran, Shamsud Din Jabbar was married thrice and divorced thrice. His first divorce was finalized in 2013 with his wife Nakedra Jabbar. In 2016, Jabbar filed for his second wife Tiera Symone Jabbar in Georgia. In 2020, Jabbar filed for divorce from wife Shaneen Jabbar. He also had a restraining wife from his third wife.
Jabbar also has a younger brother — 24-year-old Abdur Jabbar who blamed radicalization for the mass rampage. He said his brother converted to Islam at an early age but it was not for religion and more of a radicalization. Jabbar joined ISIS this summer and had an IS flag in the truck which he rammed into the celebratory crowd.
FBI’s Raia said the New Orleans attack was an act of terrorism, a premeditated and an evil act. Jabbar had a will and a testament, the FBI said. Investigators recovered several weapons from the scene of the crime and nearby areas including two improvised explosive devices in coolers located at the cross-section of Bourbon and Orleans Streets and at a second intersection just two flock away.
