PILIBHIT: A two-day-old baby boy allegedly died after being administered expired dextrose (glucose) at the special newborn care unit (SNCU) of the district women’s hospital in Pilibhit early Tuesday morning. Separate inquiry panels were subsequently formed to probe the matter.
The baby, born on Jan 26 at his family’s home in Khaprail Gautiya village, was brought to the hospital at 12:30 am after he stopped taking breastfeed and became pale and weak.
Aman Singh, the baby’s father, alleged that expired dextrose administered at the hospital caused his son’s death, showing a photograph of the dextrose bottle with its expiry date as May 2024. “Doctors referred my son to a higher facility, but he passed away on the way to a private hospital just 1.5km away,” he said.
The incident triggered protests outside the hospital as the grieving family and others expressed their outrage. In response, the CMO ordered an inquiry, with instructions to submit a report within 24 hours.
When queried, district hospital superintendent Dr Rajesh Kumar said, “A thorough check of the hospital’s stock revealed no expired medicines. However, the matter will be investigated to determine the source of the dextrose bottle.” Pilibhit Kotwali SHO Rajesh Kumar Singh said, “The body has been sent for autopsy. We will await the findings of the inquiry and the autopsy report before filing an FIR.”
