Hundreds of students protested the warden’s remark and demanded better security on campus, forcing the Tamil Nadu institute to get the warden to apologise for her “insensitive” conduct.
The arrested suspect, 38-year-old G Kathiresan from Mudhukulathur in Ramanathapuram, was in the girls’ hostel to fix a WiFi connection when he allegedly targeted the student. Based on her complaint, a case was registered at the Thiruverumbur women’s police station against the worker.
The complainant had first approached the hostel authorities, only for the warden to allegedly say that she possibly attracted the offender’s attention with her outfit.
As students continued their protest since early Friday, SP Varun Kumar visited the campus and assured the protesters that the institute would be instructed to rectify safety lapses. District collector M Pradeep Kumar said the NIT management agreed to make the required changes.
NIT-T director G Aghila told TOI that the warden accused of criticising the victim apologised to the students.
