KOLKATA: The RG Kar rape-murder victim’s family, neighbours, junior and senior doctors on Friday expressed their “deep anguish and disappointment” at CBI for failing to file its charge sheet within 90 days which led a Sealdah court to grant RG Kar ex-principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala ex-OC Abhijit Mandal default bail.
The victim’s mother said, “I am deeply disappointed by this development. We have nothing left to say. Since the CBI could not file a charge sheet within 90 days, they were granted bail. What else can I say?” She added, “I am not the CBI. Otherwise, I would have done the job myself.”
According to her family member, the CBI’s failure has “deeply disheartened” them. “We feel that all our efforts and protests demanding justice for our daughter might have gone in vain. We don’t have any more options,” the father said.
Neighbours at the Sodepur locality where the victim lived also didn’t hide their discontent over the development.
“The parents have lost their only daughter. They can never get her back. But justice for the heinous crime committed against their daughter is essential. That is why there have been protests. However, on Friday, the granting of bail to Ghosh and Mandal by the court has seemingly rendered all those efforts futile,” a local resident said.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) which spearheaded the movement said they were disappointed with the turn of events. “We wanted a court monitored CBI inquiry. The corruption in RG Kar and the former principal’s role in it are now known to everyone. But how could CBI fail to submit charge sheet even after 90 days?” asked Aniket Mahata of WBJDF.
The junior doctors said that they are happy that judgment has been pronounced in cases like Kultali and Farakka.
“But in RG Kar, powerful people are involved in the crime. Is this the reason for the delay in justice? It is a shame that such a big agency like CBI failed to submit a charge sheet even after 90 days,” said Asfakulla Naiya of WBJDF. The junior doctors’ organisation huddled into a meeting on Friday night to chalk out their future course of movement, following a prayer meet at RG Kar.
“We are shocked and outraged by the court’s decision,” said Sajal Biswas, general secretary, Service Doctors Forum. “Even after 90 days, the CBI could not submit a charge sheet against Ghosh and Mandal. We believe the state, CBI and central govt are conspiring to save the accused,” said Biplab Chandra, state secretary, Medical Service Centre.
