On the fifth day of the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin shared an emotional moment in the dressing room. The duo were seated next to each other as rain poured outside, they had a lengthy chat before hugging each other in a heartfelt moment. It later became clear that this was going to be Ashwin’s last day as an international cricketer.
India were handed a 275 run target and were 8/0 when the umpires asked players to walk off the field with bad light and not long after, rain got heavier. As a result, the third Test between the two teams was called off and they shared honours.

The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy stands at 1-1 after three Tests. The fourth Test will get underway in Melbourne on 26 December with the fifth and final contest at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.

In the first two sessions on Day 5, Australia played a rapidfire brand of cricket to reach 89/7 before deciding to declare with a 274 run lead.
Australia tried to fire quickly with Usman Khawaja picking up a couple of fours to lay down their intent. The intent to play aggressively came with a risk that Australian batters were willing to pay off.
In a space of the first 18 overs, Australia lost seven wickets and managed to put 89 runs on the board. In the first 10 overs, runs were scarce as skipper Rohit Sharma shuffled his bowlers well.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled in tandem before the latter was taken out and Akash Deep was thrown into the mix. The move worked magic, with Bumrah and Akash making inroads and restricting Australia to 28/4.
Alex Carey (20*), Travis Head (17) and Cummins (22) kept their swift approach alive and tried to deal with boundaries. Wickets kept falling but runs rose simultaneously on the board as well.
With their surge, Australia managed to put 89/7 on the boards, which Cummins and the management thought should be enough to push for a result.
Earlier in the day, India folded on 260 following Akash Deep’s dismissal, adding eight runs to their overnight total.
