Odisha ex-DG’s son Bitti Mohanty, convicted of raping a German national, dies of cancer

BHUBANESWAR: Bittihotra Mohanty, who was convicted for raping a German national in Alwar, Rajasthan, in 2006, died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday.
Son of former Odisha director general (home guards) Bidya Bhusan Mohanty, the 41-year-old Bitti was undergoing treatment for stomach cancer.
Bitti had been granted bail by the Supreme Court (SC) on March 31, 2017, in connection with the rape case. But on June 5 this year, he was asked to surrender before the police following the new Rajasthan govt’s zero tolerance policy for crime against women. His cancer was diagnosed on October 3, 2023. “Bittihotra was under treatment for stomach cancer. He had received chemotherapy and was being monitored. While undergoing treatment, he died on Sunday night,” said AIIMS Bhubaneswar superintendent Dillip Parida.
Bitti’s parents had moved the SC on the ground of his cancer treatment to grant him relief. But the apex court had rejected the plea following which he was being treated under judicial custody. Family sources said he first received chemotherapy at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack under police custody and then was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in June.
Bitti, then 25, was sentenced to seven years in jail by a fast-track court in Alwar in the rape case in 21 days. Rajasthan high court had upheld the lower court’s judgment. Bitti had been granted a 14-day parole in November 2006. But he jumped parole and was absconding till he was re-arrested from Kerala’s Kannur in March 2013, where he had got a job in a bank under a fake identity as Raghav Rajan. By producing fake documents, he had managed to appear for an exam and got the job. Following his re-arrest, a lower court in Rajasthan sentenced Bitti to three more months in jail.
In May, the apex court rejected Bitti’s plea for early release and instead asked him to surrender in the Choudwar court, Cuttack.
Bitti had surrendered as per the court order but he didn’t go to jail as his cancer was in an advanced stage and he was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, his family members said.
