NEW DELHI: Congress MP Mukul Wasnik on Monday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for not having any woman president or woman Sarsanghchaalak, respectively, in their history.
“Nirmala Sitharaman spoke a lot about women here, mentioning the various laws introduced by the ruling party in recent times, which is a very good thing. We also believe that women should get reservations, and we have worked on this too. If you proceed with it, we will fully support you; there is no doubt about it. However, have we ever seen a woman leading the Bharatiya Janata Party at the national level? To date, we haven’t seen a woman become the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Mukul Wasnik said in his maiden speech.

The Congress MP also targeted RSS, which is perceived as the BJP’s ideological mentor, for not ever having a woman head (Sarsanghchaalak) of the organisation. “The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is the ideological foundation for them, has completed almost 100 years. Have you ever seen a woman as the head of the RSS? Not until today,” Wasnik said.
He added, “Next year marks 100 years of the RSS, and women cannot become members there; only men can be volunteers. There is a separate organization called Rashtra Sevika for women.”
“In contrast, the Congress party had leaders like Annie Besant and Sarojini Naidu as presidents,” he further said.
The Congress MP also targeted the BJP for attacking the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru alleging that they are angry at Nehru because he opposed establishing a “Hindu Pakistan” during partition. “I was pleased to hear a few good words spoken here about Dr B R Ambedkar. I was also happy that the name of Sardar Patel was mentioned respectfully. However, I was surprised by the animosity and disdain expressed toward the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru,” the Congress MP said.
Wasnik added, “I believe this hatred toward Nehru stems from the fact that when Pakistan was created in the name of Islam, there were those in India who also wanted to create a Hindu Pakistan. But Nehru fought vehemently against such ideas.”
