KULLU/BATHINDA: Actor-turned BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday regretted her controversial statement about bringing back the repealed farm laws that had triggered sharp reactions from political parties in Punjab and farmer outfits and a strong rebuke from her party.
In a video clip posted on her account in X (formerly known as Twitter), Kangana said, “Many people felt disappointed by my remarks. When the farm laws were proposed, there was widespread support for them. Displaying great sympathy, the PM had withdrawn the farm laws and it’s the duty of all party workers to respect his decision.” “I must remind myself that I am not an actress now but a worker of BJP. My opinions should not be personal but reflect the party’s stand. I apologise if I have disappointed anyone with my words or views. I take my words back,” said Kangana, adding that her views on farmer laws are personal and they don’t represent the party’s stand on those bills.
Kangana, while speaking to the media at her Mandi Lok Sabha constituency on Monday, had said that farmers from only one or two states had raised concerns over the laws, “but with folded hands I appeal that the laws should be demanded back for the benefit of farmers of the country.”
Farmers and political parties had slammed her statement, calling it a ploy by BJP and asking the party to clarify whether Kangana was above the Prime Minister who had apologised for these laws.
BJP too had distanced itself from her remarks. Party leader Gaurav Bhatia on late Tuesday night clarified that Kangana was not authorised to speak on such matters and whatever she has said about farm laws is not as per the stand of the party.
AAP Punjab chief spokesperson Neel Garg in a post on X wrote “Kangana Ranaut’s U-turn on farm laws exposes BJP’s divisive agenda. First, fuel hatred, then pretend to distance yourself. Not acceptable. Aam Aadmi Party demands strict action against Kangana Ranaut for her provocative statements. BJP must stop using proxies to spread hate and take responsibility for its leaders’ actions”.
It was not the first time Kangana’s remarks had sparked a controversy. In Aug, Kangana had suggested that the farmers’ protests could have led to a Bangladesh-like situation if strong measures had not been taken by the govt. “Bodies were seen hanging and rapes were taking place during farmers protest against the now-repealed three farm laws,” she had said. Even then, BJP had distanced itself from Kangana’s remarks.
