Patient dies after IV drip; panic sparks exodus from Indore hospital

MHOW: A patient died after being administered intravenous saline at Mhow Civil Hospital on Friday evening, triggering panic among others who had also received IV fluid and prompting their families to rush them out of the medical facility without proper documentation.
Hospital sources said Dharmendra Mishra of Dharamkunj Colony in Sagore Kuti, who was admitted with high fever, died after the nursing staff administered saline solution around 3pm on Friday.
His uncle Amrish Pandey told mediapersons, “I alerted hospital staff when Dharmendra started shivering and reported restlessness. They found his pulse rate falling rapidly.”
His uncle Amrish Pandey told mediapersons, “I alerted hospital staff when Dharmendra started shivering and reported restlessness. They found his pulse rate falling rapidly. Before they could do anything, he died. Six other patients who had received saline solution also complained of shivering and restlessness.”
Panic spread, and many patients left the hospital in fear. Mishra’s body lay in bed for over three hours until late in the evening.
SDM Charanjit Singh Hooda and naib tehsildar Radhavallabh Dhakad investigated the matter. “Shivering of patients after receiving saline is a significant concern. An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death, and the IV kits used will be sent for examination,” Hooda said. Hospital in charge Dr Hansraj Verma said the IV kit was opened on Friday and an investigation will be conducted to ascertain why the patients’ condition deteriorated.
