Srigufwara-Bijbehara J&K Assembly Election Result 2024: PDP candidate Iltija Mufti trailing by 5000 votes

NEW DELHI: PDP candidate and daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, Iltija Mufti is trailing in Srigufwara-Bijbehara in Jammu and Kashmir, while National Conference candidate Bashir Ahmad Shah Veeri is leading by a margin of 5000 votes.
Srigufwara-Bijbehara, one of the 90 Assembly constituencies, is part of the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat in Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir.
This will be the first Assembly election in a decade in the Jammu and Kashmir valley, following its designation as a Union Territory in August 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370.

Who is Iltija Mufti

The 37-year-old, who entered politics after her mother Mehbooba Mufti was detained in August 2019 ahead of the revocation of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status, is making her electoral debut, replacing Abdul Rehman Veeri, who represented the seat from 1999 to 2014.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also started her electoral politics from Bijbehara, winning on Congress ticket.
Veeri, meanwhile, has been given a party ticket to contest from the Anantnag West constituency.

Main parties

In this election, the National Conference and Congress have formed an alliance, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are the other key contenders.

Key candidates

In the South Kashmir constituency of Srigufwara-Bijbehara, BJP’s Sofi Yousuf is running for office, while Iltija Mufti, daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, is representing the PDP. Tariq Ahmad Veeri, who recently rejoined the National Conference, is also contesting.

Voter turnout

Jammu and Kashmir saw an overall voter turnout of 63.88 percent, with male turnout at 64.88 percent and female turnout at 63.04 percent.

Voting and result date

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in three phases: the first on September 18, the second on September 25, and the final phase on October 1.
Srigufwara-Bijbehara voted during the first phase on September 18, 2024, with the results to be declared on October 8.
