NEW DELHI: The Mumbai Crime Branch has uncovered a plot by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to assassinate a political leader from Pune, according to a senior police officer.
This revelation comes amidst the ongoing investigation into the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique.
“The Lawrence Bishnoi gang was planning to kill the Pune leader too and the responsibility of carrying out the crime was given to the shooters involved in Plan B,” the officer stated.
The plan came to light after the Crime Branch recovered a pistol intended for the assassination. While the identity of the targeted Pune leader remains undisclosed, the Mumbai police have shared their findings with their counterparts in Pune.
This news follows the Friday arrest of Gaurav Vilas Apune, a suspected shooter linked to Siddique’s murder. Investigations revealed Apune was part of the gang’s “Plan B,” a backup strategy should their initial attempt on Siddique fail.
Apune confessed that he, alongside another suspect, Rupesh Mohol, had traveled to Jharkhand on July 28th for firearms training under the instruction of Shubham Lonkar, the alleged mastermind behind Siddique’s murder.
The duo returned to Pune on July 29th after a day of practice.
Currently, the Mumbai Crime Branch is working to pinpoint the exact location in Jharkhand where the firearms training took place, as their investigation continues.
