Koh Phangan is an island in southeast Thailand that is famous for its monthly Full Moon Party. The event draws visitors each month, and is likely to attract thousands on the new year. If you are also planning to visit the island in the coming days, then here’s something that you need to know. The island is facing growing environmental challenges that are tarnishing its reputation.
Travel content creator Grant Barnes recently shared a video on Instagram, depicting the island’s waters as “filthy foaming black water”. In the video, Barnes says ““See this beautiful pristine beach behind me? Full of poo.”
“The sewage system here can’t handle the sheer quantity of tourists that they get, especially during the Full Moon Party,” he adds.
He also shares a ‘top tip’, advising tourists to not go into the water during the Full Moon Party. According to Barnes, intoxicated tourists have been seen openly defecating and urinating in the water—a shocking revelation supported by a local news report.
“And the problem is this runoff and sewage discharge changes the quality of the water around coastal waters and that results in coral degradation too. So it’s really not a good thing”.
The video has gone viral on the internet.
