NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait Saturday for a two-day visit, saying in his departure statement earlier in the day that India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nation are not just strong trade and energy partners, but also have shared interest in peace, security, stability and prosperity in the West Asia region.
Modi said the visit would be an opportunity to chalk out a roadmap for a futuristic partnership for the benefit people in both countries and the Gulf region.
“We deeply value the historical connection with Kuwait that has been nurtured over generations. I look forward to my meetings with His Highness the emir, the Crown Prince and the Prime Minister of Kuwait,” said Modi. The bilateral talks will take place on Sunday.
TOI had first reported on Tuesday Modi would visit Kuwait over the weekend, extending his Gulf outreach to the only GCC country he had not visited so far.
Home to a million-strong Indian community, Kuwait is a reliable source of crude and LPG for India. Kuwait currently also holds GCC presidency and recently hosted a summit of member-states in which it strongly sought a ceasefire in Gaza.
India also has maintained for the past several months that a ceasefire in Gaza is its foremost concern and has continued to back a two-state solution.
Modi also visited a labour camp in Kuwait with a workforce of around 1,500 Indians.
The PM also participated in a Gulf Cup football opening ceremony.
