PM Narendra Modi congratulates Kapil Parmar on winning historic judo medal in Paralympics | Paris Paralympics News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated judoka Kapil Parmar for winning a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games.
Parmar defeated Elielton de Oliveira of Brazil by an Ippon in the Men’s 60kg J1 category in Paris, marking a historic achievement for India.

In the bronze medal match, Parmar overcame Elielton of Brazil by an Ippon to secure the third position.
The achievement is significant as it is the first time an Indian has won a medal in para-judo, following Parmar becoming the first from the country to qualify for the Paralympic Games.
Parmar’s win has taken India’s medal tally in the Paralympic Games in Paris to 25, with the country currently holding the 14th position in the overall medals tally.
India’s count now includes five gold, nine silver, and 11 bronze medals.
Parmar, a 24-year-old from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, had previously faced defeat against Iran’s Banitaba Anitaba Khoram Seyed Meysam in the semifinals. He was downed by an Ippon in a bout where he also received a penalty.
Prior to that, Parmar had advanced to the semifinals with a 10-0 victory over Marcos Dennis Blanco of Venezuela in the quarterfinals.
