Police in Lea County, New Mexico, have discovered up to 20 human skulls in a residence, potentially linking one to a woman missing since 2019.
The investigation began when a resident reported an “unsettling encounter” with a man, Cecil Villanueva, whom they had given a ride on November 5, according to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office. The resident told police that Villanueva, who was carrying two bags, “made alarming statements” during the ride and discarded objects from the vehicle, some of which appeared to be human bones.
Following the resident’s report, police found bone fragments in the area where Villanueva had allegedly discarded the bags. A pathologist confirmed that the fragments were human.
A subsequent search of Villanueva’s Jal residence, linked to “rumors of human remains,” uncovered more bone fragments, including a skull fragment and a jawbone, according to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office. Three days later, police discovered “10 to 20” human skulls during a second search of the house.

All remains were sent to the Medical Investigator’s Office in Albuquerque for identification.
Police believe the discovery may be linked to the disappearance of Angela McManes, 43, last seen in May 2019. McManes’s last known residence was near Villanueva’s address.
“Authorities are working diligently to determine the connection between the remains and McManes, as well as other possible victims,” the sheriff’s office said, as quoted by USA Today.
The investigation is ongoing. The Lea County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information to contact them at 575-396-3611 or Lea County Crimestoppers at 575-393-8005.
