ALWAR/JAIPUR: Bharatpur police have stirred up a fair amount of chuckles by announcing a 25-paisa reward—yes, you read that right—on a criminal wanted for attempted murder and violations under the SC/ST Atrocities Act. In colloquial Hindi, “chawanni” (25 paisa) is often used as a slur to imply insignificance or worthlessness and “chawanniya” is used for a worthless person.
The man in question, 48-year-old Khubiram Jat, a resident of the Lakhanpur area in Bharatpur district, was on the run for the past 7–8 months. With three serious cases to his name, including attempted murder and violations under the SC/ST Atrocities Act, Khubiram is no petty offender.
Bharatpur SP Mridul Kachhawa clarified the rationale behind the peculiar reward. “The cash reward was announced as per norms. It was not intended to be derogatory,” he told TOI. “Given that he was evading arrest for several months, the announcement of a reward is standard procedure.”
However, sources within the police department hinted at another motivation. They suggested that this symbolic reward is part of a deliberate effort to deglamorise criminals, stripping them of the infamy they often seek.
